Tuesday afternoon I created a reminder on my phone to wear my World Wildlife Federation t-shirt in celebration of Earth Day. Part of the proceeds from the purchase of this organic cotton tee benefitted the WWF so overall it felt like a good purchase. This morning, I walked into the office and wished everyone a happy Earth Day. Steve Piccione, a LVS contributing writer, responded back with “Every day is Earth Day.” Touché I thought.
Yes, every day should, in fact, be Earth Day. We should all be more conscious about the world’s current state and how we can reduce our carbon footprint. Furthermore, we really should consider even the little practices like recycling, replacing light bulbs with energy-efficient ones, and using reusable shopping bags at the mall or grocer that actually do make a difference. You can read about our staff’s favorite earth-friendly ideas and practices in the April issue on page 30.
To celebrate Earth Day, you can partake in a variety of awesome outdoor events this weekend. With weather forecasters predicting sunny skies and temperatures in the 80s, it’s going to take a skilled master to devise a plan of attack.
Beginning Friday, April 24, Somerset Nursery in Zionsville will host Art in the Garden featuring local artists, garden events, and a little something for everyone in the family. Free for all, proceeds from the weekend’s events like food, drink, and the rubber duck race will benefit the Ronald McDonald Camp. Friday events run from 5-7 p.m. Enjoy Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Somerset Nursery is located at 6671 Chestnut St., Zionsville.
On Saturday, bustling South Side Bethlehem will hold its annual spring fest with events taking place on Third and Fourth streets and its surrounding areas. To celebrate Spring on 4th, Homebase Skateshop and The Source Bike Shop are shutting down South New Street for a skateboard and BMX demo from noon-4 p.m. Plus, bring your appetite for the chili cook off with delicious recipes from local businesses. Following the demo, stop by Blue Sky Café from 7:30-9:30 p.m. for local musicians Hank Tate & Phil Ballins, Divine Ryhme, and Timecode. The $10 entry donation will benefit the Bethlehem Skateplaza.
Or if you’re a dog lover like me, this Saturday visit The Promenade Shops at Saucon Valley for Paws on the Promenade. Paws for a Cause Expo begins at 11 a.m. until 4 p.m. where you can meet representatives from local animal shelters to learn about their specific causes. At noon, Pups on Parade begins with those four-legged furry friends romping around the shops–some in their best doggie threads. Hmmm, maybe you’ll see me there with Winston wearing his “Low Rider” t-shirt–he’s a Dachshund, get it? At 2 p.m. treat your pup to free frozen yogurt at the Patio Food Court, or visit Dandelion for a special Pet Portrait Gallery showing by Jane Caruso of Contemporary Concepts Photography.
As if that’s not enough, finish off the weekend at the Allentown Brew Works for The Ladies Affair. Beauty, fashion, and shopping collide from 1-6 p.m. with proceeds benefitting the AIDS Activities Office of Lehigh Valley Health Network.
This weekend, support a local cause, our local economy, and your Mother Earth by getting outside and enjoying the weather at one or all of these special events. If you really want to be Earth conscious, car pool, walk, or bike to your destination.
Next step, creating my weekend plan. See you there!
